Mounting of seating parts on concrete – A practical solution for year-round usable seating areas

Concrete is a popular material in modern landscape design. Especially outdoors, cast concrete blocks are often used as seating. However, concrete has a significant drawback: in Central European latitudes, it is only comfortably usable in midsummer. For the rest of the year, it remains cold, damp, and prone to dirt and moisture.

 

The problem: Unusable concrete seats outdoors

A school in Munich also faced this problem. The existing concrete blocks, intended as seating options, were unusable on most days of the year. The challenge was to find a cost-effective solution that makes the concrete seats usable year-round without compromising their aesthetic appeal.

The Solution: "Style" Seat Section by Erlau

To solve the problem, the "Style" seat section from Erlau was used, which is normally screwed into benches. In this case, however, it was mounted directly onto the existing concrete bases – without using adapter brackets, making the installation particularly simple. However, mounting with adapters offers additional advantages, especially for cleaning.

 

Advantages of the "Style" Seat Section

The "Style" seat section was designed to optimally utilize the base and make the concrete blocks usable from both sides. Here are the main advantages at a glance:

• Weather resistance: Thanks to the thermal coating, the seat section dries quickly after rain and is usable again.
• Year-round use: Due to the thermal insulation, the seat section remains comfortable even at cold temperatures and protects against the coldness of the concrete.
• Easy cleaning: The coated seat section is easy to clean and resistant to dirt and moisture, minimizing maintenance effort.

In the Munich project, the double-seat "Style" seat section with a one-piece wire mesh insert was chosen to make the concrete base usable from both sides. A total of thirteen seat sections were installed on the concrete blocks, now providing comfortable seating throughout the year.
